Germantown Tennesse is a city in Shelby County TN. Germantown borders Memphis to the east southeast and as of 2010 had a population of nearly 40,000 people. Germantown is host to many horse shows and horse competitions. The most notable would certainly be the Germantown Charity Horse Show in June. The first settlers arrived in Germantown around 1825. By 1830 as more settlers were moving in the very first store was opened in Germantown. The first known name for Germantown was Pea Ridge. The name was changed in 1836 to Germantown and yes this was because of the settling of German families in the area.
The town was incorporated in 1841 and things started to happen from there. Germantown has had its fair share of setbacks and challenges like the yellow fever epidemic in the 1860s that set the population back to only a few hundred.
The name of the city was briefly changed during World War 1 due to anti-German sentiment. The name Neshoba, a Chickasaw word meaning wolf was chosen. The last half of the century the population exploded from 400 to more than 40,000.
